Tha Tian: The Market behind the Grand Palace
Often referred to as the market behind the Grand Palace, Tha Tian is located near Wat Phra Chetuphon (Wat Pho), on the bank of the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok. During the Ayutthaya period, this area served as a pier for foreign junks to enter Thailand for trade contact, as evidenced by an amount of chinaware found nearby. The area, known as the Bangkok community, was later turned into a trade center for agricultural products, which was in operation until the Thon Buri period.

Vajirathan Waterfall on Doi Inthanon

Sao Chaliang – the national monument of standing rocks
Who say rock is not important? In the northeastern part of Thailand, found a variety of rocks that were once used as tools by indigenous inhabitants of the prehistoric era. Some of them, with odd shapes, have stood so long that we cannot believe they have been like this since the beginning of life. Most rock mountain is destined to be worn away by forces of nature. Some have not survived yet some have. The standing rocks called “Sao Chaliang” are among the latter that have withstood through harsh conditions over 130 millions years of the Cretaceous Period and 180 millions of years of the Jurassic period. They still stand monumental in a mushroom-like form. The name “Sao Chaliang” comes from the word “Sa-liang” which means a rock pole.

Rainy Season at Wat Dhammaram in Ayutthaya
Located opposite the city island near Hua Laem, west of Ayutthaya province, Wat Dhammaram is a royal forest temple dating back to the Ayutthaya Kingdom. It sometimes faces flooding during the rainy season, as seen in this picture. In front of the temple is the area where the Lop Buri River meets the Chao Phraya River. The temple compound served as a strategic location, where armies from outside moved to the city. A vast field, called Thung Prachet, is found at the back and it was one of the battlefields where fierce fighting between Thai and Burmese armies took place.
